Electric Ukulele
When you see the title above you could be asking yourself “What is an electric ukulele?” The answer is very simple. This is an instrument that is related to the guitar that has been electrified for further sound. Sometimes the ukulele needs a sound boost such as when recording or playing. It is the same body type as a regular ukulele but has been electrified so that the sound can be heard further than just a few feet in any direction. This allows for projection of sound for all to hear.
An electric ukulele has been used on recordings and some concert appearances. The fact is that it can be played either acoustically or electrically with the same results. We will cover an acoustic-electric ukulele in a future article. A ukulele has a Solid Body that really doesn’t present sound very far but it has been updated so that you can use it with amplification to bring the beautiful sound of the ukulele out in any situation. The ukulele is considered to be a traditional instrument in different places such as Hawaii for example. No matter who is playing this instrument, amplification can be needed.
This is why this electric ukulele has been created. This is really not a new instrument. This instrument has been considered traditional as stated before and has been around for a long time before the process of electrification came along and has withstood the test of time. The sounds that are amplified by using an electric version of this instrument are sweet and true as if you were playing it acoustically. It basically is just louder so that it can be heard for more than a certain yard range wherever it is played.
At parties, an electric ukulele can really be heard very well over the chatter and noise of the guests. While some purists will fume at the alteration of the ukulele, others will greet the electric version with cheers. Depending on the situation, you will need to have the instrument heard over other things going on around or near the instrument and player. That is why this type of instrument was developed in the first place. A few feet really isn’t good enough to be heard over a loud crowd. But the range of this electrified instrument is much more and can be heard over the roar of a crowd.
So rest assured that the electric ukulele is not a new instrument. The updates to it are pretty new compared to the age that the ukulele has been around. This does allow for the instrument to be heard especially if it is in a recording studio or for live performance. It will all depend on the setting as to whether or not using electricity is needed or not. For a small venue, it may not be. A larger venue definitely would need amplification to get it heard throughout the venue and makes it unnecessary for an extra microphone for the instrument itself.
